Groundwater recharge from heavy rainfall in the southwestern Lake Chad Basin: evidence from isotopic observations

چکیده
We examine groundwater recharge processes and their relationship to rainfall intensity in the semi-arid, southwestern Lake Chad Basin of Nigeria using a newly compiled database stable isotope data (?2H, ?18O) from rainfall. ?18O signatures proximate surface waters are enriched 18O relative regional trace focused evaporated via ephemeral river discharge Chad; remote channels is comparatively depleted associated with diffuse recharge, often sand dunes. Stable ratios O H samples regress value along local meteoric waterline that weighted mean composition rainfall, consistent exceeding 60th percentile monthly precipitation intensity. The observed bias heavy suggests intensification tropical under global warming favours this basin.

Impacts of Groundwater Recharge from Rubber Dams on the Hydrogeological Environment in Luoyang Basin, China
In the rubber dam's impact area, the groundwater total hardness (TH) has declined since 2000, ultimately dropping to 100-300 mg/L in 2012. pH levels have shown no obvious changes. NH4-N concentration in the groundwater remained stable from 2000 to 2006, but it increased from 2007 to 2012, with the largest increase up to 0.2 mg/L. NO3-N concentration in the groundwater generally declined in 2000...
متن کاملCumulative rainfall collectors – A tool for assessing groundwater recharge
The great majority of Southern African aquifers depend on rainfall for their recharge. The accurate estimation of recharge remains one of the biggest challenges for groundwater investigators. Accurate recharge estimations are needed for proper groundwater management as this governs the estimation of sustainable exploitation. Current estimates of recharge to aquifers range between 0.2 and 3% of ...

This discussion paper is/has been under review for the journal Climate of the Past (CP). Please refer to the corresponding final paper in CP if available. Abstract Located at the transition between the Saharian and Sahelian zones, at the center of one of the largest endoreic basins, the Lake Chad is ideally located to record regional environmental changes that occurred in the past. However, unt...
متن کاملGroundwater Recharge Assessment: a Key Component of River Basin Management
Groundwater recharge estimates are required for the management of river basin districts under the new Water Framework Directive. Different recharge estimation techniques are described in this paper according to the following categories: inflow estimation, aquifer response analysis, outflow estimation and catchment water balance. Examples of their application in Ireland are provided. All estimat...
متن کاملOccurrence and source of geogenic arsenic in groundwater from the Cold Lake-Beaver River Basin, Alberta
Elevated arsenic concentrations have been observed in shallow groundwater in the Cold Lake-Beaver River Basin (CLBR) of Alberta. The geology of this area includes up to 200 m of unconsolidated glacial deposits, with six regional interglacial sand and gravel aquifers, underlain by marine shale. Arsenic concentrations in unconsolidated sediment samples ranged between 1 to 17 ppm. Mineralogical ch...
